Sunscreen 101

Why, Why and How to Protect Your Skin

We often think of sun protection as something we only reach for on vacation or during the summer. But in reality, the sun’s UV rays are a daily force, no matter the weather. Incorporating sun protection into your everyday routine is one of the simplest, most effective habits to preserve your skin’s long-term health. This is how you do so.

Why should you wear sunscreen daily?

UV radiation is a daily threat to our skin’s health. It can cause DNA mutations that lead to skin cancer and causes premature skin aging (photoaging), triggering hyperpigmentation, inflammation, textural issues and lines and wrinkles.

Come rain or shine, the sun’s UV rays are present all year round. While UVB radiation (the type responsible for burning and DNA damage) is lower in cloudy conditions and winter, UVA, responsible for skin aging, can pass through clouds and glass. If it’s daylight, UV is present.

The best way to protect your skin from long-term, cumulative damage is by making sunscreen part of your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth.

Why zinc oxide?

A naturally occurring mineral, zinc oxide forms a protective layer over the skin, reflecting and absorbing both UVA and UVB rays. Traditionally, due to its white coloring, it leaves a chalky, detectable finish on the skin, particularly in high-factor formulations. However, our micronized zinc oxide, an ultra-thin form that is small enough to feel sensorily elegant and sheer, while staying on the surface of the skin to do its job, allows for a lightweight, blendable texture.

You will find micronized zinc oxide in all of our SunsolveMD sunscreens and as part of our patented ZnO+ Mineral Care Complex™, which not only protects against UV radiation but also helps reverse the visible effects of sun damage and target skin concerns.

How to apply sunscreen properly

So, you’ve purchased your sunscreen and you’re applying it daily, but are you applying it properly? Here’s what you need to know:

Apply the right amount:

Using too little means you won’t get the full protection stated on the label. As a general rule, you need to apply ½ teaspoon for your face and neck, plus a little extra for your ears, scalp and back of neck if exposed. For your limbs and torso, aim for a teaspoon per area.

Don’t skip over these often-missed areas:

The eyelids, skin above the lips, back of the hands and tops of the feet are frequently overlooked during sunscreen application. Many sunscreens can cause eye stinging, but our Firm + Replenish Eyes cream is specifically formulated for the delicate eye area (i.e. the delicate eye area so it won’t run into your eyes and irritate). Similarly, the lips are often unprotected, leaving them prone to sunburn and a high-risk area for skin cancer. To protect them, we recommend investing in a dedicated SPF lip product like our Volumize + Condition SPF40+ lip oil

Reapply every two hours (or more often if you’re swimming or sweating)

For sunscreen to be effective, it needs to form a continuous film over the skin. This protective layer is easily disrupted throughout the day by sweat, oil, fabric transfer, touching your face, and towel-drying. If you are spending time outdoors or even sitting near a window, regular reapplication is essential to maintain protection.

Apply it at the end of your routine:

Sunscreen should always be applied last. Think of it as a protective shield you apply before going about your day. If you have specific skin concerns, our ZnO+ Mineral Care collection expertly curated, results-driven actives that can complement your targeted serums or replace them completely if you simply want to cleanse, protect and go. Want a little coverage? Choose our AntiOxtint range: a collection of six silky and breathable SPF skin tints.

Don’t rely on sunscreen alone:

Practicing sun safety goes beyond sunscreen application. Wearing protective clothing and accessories such as sunglasses, hats and cotton cover ups, can significantly enhance your defense against UV exposure. When UV levels are at their highest (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.), seek out shade whenever possible, especially in summer.

Investing in daily sun protection is investing in your future self. With SunsolveMD, we’re redefining the future of suncare.
